The quiet swoosh of your skis gliding swiftly across untouched powder. Snow capped peaks standing comfortably, as if they were spectators of your adventure. The joy felt amongst that silent parade. It's almost tangible.

You could snow camp if you like. But I'll be finding my way to one of these four huts sitting perfectly along the Continental Divide in the middle of the best backcountry skiing in Western Canada.

Who needs a chairlift? I'm headed for Banff.

I was just a toddler when this image was published in National Geographic Magazine during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan but I've been following Steve McCurry's work for years now.

His blog is brilliant, colorful and sometimes heartbreaking.

So it comes as no surprise that I was super excited to learn about a new web series from Phaidon, the publishing company behind McCurry's photography books:

As I continue to explore this gorgeous city in the Pacific Northwest, I find that I don my Super Explorer cape mostly when visitors come to town. One of the reasons I love being a tour guide, aside from being in charge, is because I inevitably find something new to me too.

Each time my Pops, that dear old land conservationist, comes to visit me we like to try a new hiking trail. Last time he came up we decided to go for less bushwhacking and more strolling in a nearby park. We consulted my trusty Oregon guidebooks, Best Hikes with Dogs (because you know my sweet devil dog has to come along) and 60 Hikes within 60 Miles and found something to suit our taste. Turns out it's the only Oregon state park in a metro area.

Tryon Creek State Park is in southwest Portland, near Lewis and Clark College, about a twenty minute drive from downtown. In the spring, these 645 forested acres are filled with blossoming trillium and native plants. There's an old, creaking suspension bridge and also a paved bike path for those who want to explore on wheels. And the best part? A gorgeous creek winding through it all.

If you're a nature lover of the half pint variety, check out their nature store, youth camps and guided walks. I'm sure one of those adorably enthusiastic park volunteers can tell you all about it.

It was perfectly peaceful and I'll certainly go back again. Although, next time I have a visitor I'm planning on taking them to Cooper Spur. Up to 8500 feet. Who's it gonna be?

Meet Ruth

This September she will turn 100. And what an extraordinary life she has to look back upon.

As an American journalist and former government official, she is most known for her photo essays of Jewish refugees in Europe in the late 1940's. You can see some of those photos here and other photos here. She was able to go where few journalists could go, partially due to luck, but more likely because of her moxie.

A "hunger for clarity" and noticing great opportunities when they arise is what drives Ruth in work and in life.

Her memoir Witness: One of the Great Correspondents of the 20th Century Tells Her Story came out in 2007 and a documentary “Ahead of Time" about her early years was released last September.

I plan to read and view each and every piece that I come across on this inspiring individual.
I won't pass up THAT opportunity.

Green Ideas: Flight Plan

Some may say being green is just a trend. But frankly, if that's the way environmentalism goes mainstream then I'm happy. Outdoors men and women generally understand the importance of taking care of Mother Earth because we frequently enjoy her riches. But all too often I find myself picking up plastic water bottles or snack wrappers along the gorgeous trails and rivers I walk. My optimism tells me they probably just dropped it without noticing, but who knows.

Being an eco-conscious citizen does have it's struggles and compromises. One sacrifice I'm not (yet) willing to make is to not travel by plane. There are those who live X-treme Green! and choose to travel only by bike. But I'm of the belief that perfection leads to despair and for each flight I take I do a handful of things to lessen my impact and protect this gorgeous place we call home.

Here are a few large and small ideas for lessening your impact when flying:

1. Carbon offsets - it's definitely controversial but at this point it's one of the only ways to fly green. A few legit offsetting sites here.

2. Bring your own water bottle - duh. These are my favorite. I also bring my own travel coffee mug, for the plane and when I get to my destination.

3. Say 'no, thanks' to the snacks offered - less waste and you could probably have better options if you...

4. Pack your own snacks! - I always make a trip to the bulk bins at the market before I travel. Fun snacks you can pack in a reusable sack you made yourself! Wha?! Also, low blood sugar is one quick way to come close to murdering your chatty seatmate.

5. Bring a sweater or wrap to avoid using the blanket, which may or may not be rewashed - Either way, no bueno.

Travel Wish: Yosemite. In the Winter

For the past few years I've had the good fortune to visit Yosemite National Park each summer. I've been able to volunteer with a group of friends which allows us to stay for a long weekend in a campground away from the crowds (albeit closer to the bears), for free! Our volunteer projects vary each year, anything from cleaning out fire pits to building part of the amphitheater.

The volunteer weekend usually happens in August or September when tourists are still swarming but Yosemite's infamous waterfalls are starting to trickle down. Above the valley the air starts to turn a bit cooler but my last few visits have been during such a hot spell that we spent most of our time floating in the Merced River. Perhaps what I need is a little cold spell over the gorgeous landscape I've become so familiar with.

I was delighted to see a winter weekend suggestion from Outside Magazine for a cozy little ski cabin in Yosemite.

Living in the SF Bay Area makes weekend trips to Yosemite very accessible as it's about a three to four hour drive from most parts of the Bay. Although I'm a bit further away I may be tempted to make a special trip to see such a magical place blanketed in snow.

I first experienced the vastness of Wyoming during the summer months. I was a young girl on a road trip, camping across the western states with my family. I remember the smelly geysers in Yellowstone National Park, the gigantic Grand Tetons, and even more gigantic moose. I collected rocks, bought a moose t-shirt and, of course, took photos....

As an adult I dream of experiencing the Jackson Hole area all year round. Check it out. There's a variety of mountain bike trails, from entry level to advanced single track. You can go paragliding or horseback riding. Fish, kayak or white water raft along the curving Snake River. And roam off the beaten track along miles of hiking trails.

Then, after the snow falls, there's world class skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing and perhaps even a sleigh ride. All of which lead up to a big bowl of Wild Game Chili at the Snake River Brewery.

*Sigh*

It all sounds too good to be true. But it's there. I swear. Here's some more proof:

For years I've been looking for a practical yet stylish hiking shoe. I love Keen footwear but they're a bit too clunky for a small framed gal like myself. And I've come close to perfection with Merrell, comfortable boots that can go from country to city and that last for years. But I've still never found the holy grail of feminine trail boots. Until now.

Friends, my search has come to an end.

And they're only a thousand bucks. A small price to pay for ingenuity.

I'm pretty sure Outside Gear Girl would approve. No?

Ad Alta: To the Summit

A newly discovered love for alpine treks has led me to find and devour all things mountain climbing. My experiences on the mountains I climb are nothing! (aside from the Clif bars in my pack) close the ones I have seen or read.

I watched and adored the foreign film, Nordwand, not only for it's period attire and young female photojournalist but also for the nail biting attempts to climb the terrifying mountain face of the Eiger.

I read an article about Jordan Romero, a thirteen year old mountain climber with only two of the Seven Summits left to climb.

And I just finished Into Thin Air, the personal account of Jon Krakauer's ascent of Mt. Everest.

Then I came across this film; Farther Than the Eye Can See. It's free. It's 50 minutes long. And it's incredibly inspiring. So I wanted to share. Maybe it will inspire you to climb peaks of your own, physically or otherwise.

This rock was carved just below the top of Mt. Hood by a Japanese climbing party in 1910, exactly 100 years and one month before I stood before it.

hello again!

you may (or may not) have noticed the radio silence so far this summer. but, relocating, revamping and an overall reviving of my life was in order. i'm happy to share that my new life is filled with joy and happiness every. single. day. (thanks to a little hard work and a lot of gratitude)

now that things are moving along swimmingly I shall return to this space with a special project for the month of August. it's a special month to me, for several reasons, and this project seems to be a perfect celebration of this time.

The plan is to share one photo per day (or whenever i darn well please).

An ever so slight glimpse into New Zealand nightlife

Christchurch: The evening started out simple enough. Just three handsome, err…Hansen travelers looking for a little fun before leaving town.

Dinner was recommended by one of those (occasionally) trusty tourist maps. These maps are definitely hit or miss. Sometimes you wind up eating “sushi” filled with chicken? Miss! Other times you wind up at The Mexican Café.
Head up a flight of stairs, which might be a little tricky coming down after a jug of margaritas, and enter an eating area with a long wooden bar and décor that appeared to be leftover from the Fourth of July and/or Cinco de Mayo, I’m not really sure.

My dad chose to order a chimichanga, which I think is Mexican for fried burrito, then washed it down with an electric blue margarita. Clearly what a 66 year old man with high blood pressure should order. Once I tasted my fresh lime margarita, which was really just four shots of tequila and a lime wedge, I was happy as a clam, not worrying about my dad’s health.

Turns out the Mexican Café is in an area called SOL or South of Lichfield.

A small section of about twelve bars similar to what is seen in European metro areas; two story bars, pumping music and offering samples of liquor on a narrow, cobblestone car free street.

We strolled, assessed the vibe and decided on a classy place offering five dollar Cuba Libras.

A snakeskin boot-wearing Kiwi I like to call Dundee represented Havana Club and ended up taking us through his collection of Cuban rums, obviously something we don’t have in the states. Quality stuff.

Five shots later he offered us free Cuba Libres. My brother likes to think it’s because he was charming but I think he felt sorry for us because we were barhopping with our grey haired dad.

We sipped our drinks and watched the scene. Pretty similar to any bar scene; short skirts, chest hair and taxi cabs.

Then my dad said he wasn’t feeling well, quel surprise, and my brother and I decided we didn’t want to walk/pay for the twenty-five plus blocks back to our hotel, so we headed home with Pops.

What did you expect? I went out with my father and brother. I promised nothing more than a slight glimpse.

I found this tiny backpacker at the YHA in Christchurch. She must have been at least 75 years old. I wish I'd gotten a picture of her from the front. Her patch is a flag of Northern Territory Australia. I'm very curious how long she's had that backpack. And even more curious where she has traveled and what she has seen.

Unexpected Queenstown: My Perfect Day

Queenstown, New Zealand is known to many as the adventure capital of the world. Sky diving, bungee, jet boating, white water rafting, heli-skiing. Adrenaline city.

I’m close to being classified as an adrenaline junkie but with all the hype about this commercialized tourist destination I had to be unruly and do the opposite. So, I enjoyed a quiet hike, dined alone, soaked in a hot pool and called it an early night. And I’m so unbelievably happy that I did.

But let’s rewind just a tick…

Ever taken one of those quizzes that asks you to describe your perfect day? Sometimes it’s difficult to answer because the possibilities are endless. Well, March 22, 2010 will now be the day I look back on to answer that question.

After waking up leisurely in a family home on the shores of Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, I savored a cup of French press coffee. Later, my family/interim tour guides treated me to a tasty lunch at the Cardrona Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in New Zealand. It was built in 1863 and is now a popular après-ski bar, among other things. Quirks around every corner, it was a photographers dream. A glass of red wine and the afternoon sun warmed me inside and out.

Then, before heading back to their home in Dunedin, they dropped me off in Queenstown, after dutifully showing me around and checking me in. With my chest puffed proudly, I hiked up a strenuous grade, through ferns, flax and other typical New Zealand bush, to the top of the city. More fantastic photography, of course.

After I made my way down, by gondola this time, I indulged in what I think is the best beer in New Zealand (Dux de Lux Brewery) and half price pizza. Yes. Pizza and beer.

The crowning jewel of my day was when I headed by shuttle bus just outside of town to Onseen Hot Pools for a soak in a tub.

It wasn’t until I saw my private pool that I realized just how unbelievably happy I was. I was shown to a private room with my own Japanese style wood sided hot tub and large glass shower. That alone made me smile. But then, I opened the door, a garage style roll top, to reveal a silhouette of towering mountains and a grassy hill below. The stars were brighter and denser than ever, and there I was giggling to myself at my good fortune.

For a short while I truly understood the definition of joy.

And then…I took my Blackberry out to record my thoughts. Cuz that’s how I roll.

I typed furiously fast, then, returned to my little slice of heaven.

When did I get so lucky?

I arrived in Christchurch by plane, ~~train~~ bus and automobile and just as I was hitting my 24^th hour of travel, I made it to my accommodations. City Centre Motel on Colombo Avenue is several blocks from the square but felt like a hike up Kilimanjaro with twenty five pounds on my back and ten pounds on my front (backpacks not weight gain from airport cuisine). It took most of the little energy I had left not to bear hug Mary, one of the lovely Scottish woman owners, when she said I could check in three hours earlier than protocol. Seriously, if...no, make that you come to New Zealand, you must stay at this motel in Christchurch. Clean, spacious, comfortable rooms with every amenity a traveler needs. Tina, the other owner, even drove me to my bus early the next morning, which gave my sore knee a break.

After munching on my first fish and chip of the trip (provided by 'The ChipMobile') and enjoying a bit of sunbathing in Cathedral Square, I headed inside the church to listen to the Christchurch Choristers. Every Friday at 4:30pm, the young boys choir sing a half hour service. The best part is that this was the same chorus my father sang in when he was a young boy in the early 1950’s. Surreal is the only word I would use to describe what it was like to listen to these boys in their long white robes and soprano voices, then picture my father in that exact spot. Their voices were melodic and yes, I have to say, angelic. I was so pleased I was able to see them. It made me love and appreciate my father that much more. Which I didn’t even know was possible.

After a pint at The Bog (read: a place to drink Guinness) then a mouth watering lamb salad and cold Black Beer at Monteith's Brewing Company, I headed for a quick stop at the supermarket for breakfast provisions, while admiring the locals doing their routine shopping. I was able to catch the Red Bus, a free shuttle within the limits of Christchurch city center, right as I stepped outside of the market, almost squealing with delight that I wouldn’t have to walk the twenty plus blocks back to my motel. I love a good public transportation system! Still relying on my melatonin supplements to put me in the right sleep cycle I snoozed out early so I could catch the 8:30 Intercity bus leaving for Wanaka the next morning.

I was like a kid on Christmas morning, wide eyed with camera in hand, eager to catch all the sights of the countryside as we made our way south. Three hours passed and I was not so bushytailed. The landscape was unexpectedly dry and flat, almost all acres and acres of agriculture. The only redeeming factors were the distant craggily mountains and the multicolored clouds veiling each peak.

At least I was able to stretch my legs for the whole journey having strategically placed myself behind the second stairwell of the bus. Sure, it was right behind the toilet but having traveled on many a bus trip I’ve learned to take that chance. Trust me, the view and legroom greatly out weigh the smell.

Eventually arriving in Wanaka, a lakeside vacation spot for South Islanders, after a 7-hour bus ride and a transfer to a small taxi for another 30 minutes, I was happily greeted by family. My second cousin Anna picked me up and straight away I relaxed into family mode, kicking my feet up and letting them take care of me. I have no qualms about maintaining my guest status, especially when my hosts are so insistent. Sure I’ll offer to help with the meal and chip in on the cleanup but I was content to drink wine and gossip about the rest of our family with Anna’s mom, Jenny, my father’s cousin.

Speaking of the meal, we devoured a traditional Hungarian stew, Toltott Paprika, made by the young Hungarian family living in Jenny’s bach. Toltott Paprika is pork and rice stuffed peppers in a tomato sauce. Sounds pretty basic but it is undeniably delicious. Maybe it was the fact that I, an American, was eating traditional food made by and shared with Hungarians on my first night with my New Zealand family. I dug it and I would eat that way again and again.

By the way, bach is Kiwi speak for vacation home and the Hungarian family came to live here in such a roundabout way I won’t even try to explain it.

Nonetheless, it was their young daughters second birthday, we celebrated with carrot cake and candles, and the young mum’s due date for their second child was…that weekend!! As I write this, the baby has yet to arrive so I’m afraid I will miss the hustle and bustle of her early stages of labor. An inside peak into the locals way of life is truly the greatest form of travel.

Grounding Myself Before Takeoff

It's about that time. I've finally planned a trip to New Zealand. And I leave tomorrow.

So much has changed in the last six months, in my life and in myself, it seems to have all been building for this. Or maybe this is my reward for all the hard work I've been doing. Either way, it's perfect timing. Depending on how you choose to look at the world, it's always perfect timing.

My BFF (best furry friend) and I went on a hike a few days ago, to enjoy the gorgeous Sonoma County spring weather and to spend some time together before I leave. As I was picturing myself tramping through New Zealand I noticed these magnificent tree branches with a sky blue backdrop. It brought me back to the moment and was a clear reminder for me to maintain my roots. There are more changes to come for me, involving loads of travel if I have any say in the matter. When I need a reminder to maintain balance, I'll return to this image.

'Cause couldn't we all use a little more balance in life? I'm thinkin' - - - Work and Play. Earth and Sky. Roots and Wings.

So I'm packed (sort of), planned (in a way) and ready for the 13 hour flight (my Valerian supplements are waiting) with the New Zealand Air crew. Hopefully they'll be wearing clothes.

Zephyr Cove: looks healthy to me

CNN posted a travel article via Health magazine describing the top 10 healthiest beach and lake getaways in America. I suppose it's not surprise that 3 of the 10 are in California. Just another reminder why we live in this expensive, crowded state.
Of course, one of the three is technically in Nevada; Zephyr Cove on Lake Tahoe. But, I'm counting it as a beach on our side of the border because you would never really know you crossed the state line anyway. Until, perhaps, you noticed the legal gambling.

Pico Iyer is a travel writer unlike any other. A self-proclaimed multi-national soul, he was born in England, raised in California and is of Indian descent. He is the son of a philosopher and a religious scholar, and was educated at Eton, Oxford, and Harvard. Oh, and he's a friend of the Dalai Lama. He's prodigous.

He says, "I am not rooted in a place, I think, so much as in certain values and affiliations and friendships that I carry everywhere I go. My home is both invisible and portable."
"Uh huh," I say, eyes wide, mouth agape, "tell me more, dear sage."
Needless to say, I trust his opinion when it comes to matters on travel, and matters on, well, life.

I was thrilled to see an article of his in the June issue of Real Simple magazine and further surprised by what he had to say. Specifically, when he suggests to 'embrace being a tourist' and to 'go to McDonald's'?

But, I get it now, Mr. Iyer. I get it.

I love Paris...any time of year

Cole Porter was certainly not mistaken in his love for Paris in the springtime. And it's obviously a tune that lives on well after it was written. But those who don't know the rest of the lyrics may not be aware that he also loved Paris in the fall, winter and more importantly, summer.
It was June when I finally had to leave Paris, after months of wandering the cobblestone nooks and devouring baguettes with Nutella. And after a semester studying the likes of Collette and Flaubert, my travel funds had run dry. To this day I regret not attempting to find some kind of work to stave off my impending departure. I had traveled internationally many times before, but I had never had culture shock until I came back to the States after my time in France.
I remember when it was that I finally realized why Paris was dubbed the City of Lights. Trolling around in the apartment my beau and I had rented, we felt it to be the right time to start cooking dinner just by the quiet grumbling in our stomachs. The 'cooking' was more like arranging things on a plate; salami, crusty bread, olives, tomato and other fruits. We drank wine in ceramic mugs and smoked gouloisses. As I puttered about I glanced at the time, something I rarley did during that period of my life, and realized it was well past 10pm. The setting sun had been seeping in through our windows making us feel as though it were much earlier. Even after the sun had officially set, the light coming from all angles glowed in such a mystical way, as though it would remain twilight all night. I was smitten with this city before but now I had officially fallen in love. All seasons in Paris are magical in there own way, but summer days last longer and the more time you have in the City of Lights the better.

More often than not I watch random television just to enjoy the scenery and find some travel inspiration. And frankly, I'll watch reality shows like The Bachelorette because I'm a hopeless romantic always up for a good love match, even if it's arranged for ratings.
So when this season's mingling singles traveled to British Columbia, I was ecstatic. Vancouver, Whistler, Banff; an outdoor adventurers dream.
And thanks to World Hum, I've found a new way to describe my TV travel obsession: travel porn!

Green Ideas: Take a nap!

This tid bit comes from the tip library over at Green is Sexy. Their site is filled to the brim with ideas and links to make tiny changes resulting in a big impact.
Their motto: "Because being informed is sexy. Being responsible is sexy. Being eco-friendly is sexy. Making a difference is sexy. Green is sexy."
Who can argue with that?!

On the nap train...
There are lots of things you can do for your health that will help you operate your life in a greener way. Take napping for example: just a 15-20 minute lie back per day will allow you to feel more energetic and effective for the rest of your day and evening. That may mean one less coffee (cup, beans, water, espresso maker energy, dollar bills….) or one less energy drink (can, factory process, change, vending machine cooling system…). That also may mean that you’ll have the energy to take on more activities later too, like making dinner at home instead of ordering out or line drying your clothes instead of putting them in the dryer. The energy you put in will come back to you.

Poverty tours

The subject of big city slums has been of interest to me since I watched the affecting movie City of God many years ago. Set in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, the movie explores the lives of two young boys growing up in extreme poverty.
Last year, National Geographic featured Norwegian photojournalist Jonas Bendiksen's photography in an article on the Dharavi slum in Mumbai and recently Budget Travel revisited Bendiksen's photography in his website, The Places We Live, which focuses on families living in the slums of Caracas, Jakarta, Mumbai, and Nairobi.
I'm not one to be nervous about traveling off the beaten path, so I would be game to take a tour through one of these neighborhoods. But it's true; the ones who would benefit most from being exposed to such poverty are the ones who would sign up last.
I can understand the argument that such tours exploit the lives of impoverished people but I'm also a firm believer that awareness is the first step in creating social change. Making a connection with someone from a completely different walk of life can open ones eyes to new ways of thinking. Connecting with others by finding our similarities can lead to a better understanding of humanity in the modern world.
The more we become aware of these fast growing neighborhoods, the closer we come to finding solutions to the overpopulation, disease and crime these neighborhoods face. More than one billion people live in shantytowns. I believe it's time we focused on them.

On the Road with Frank Gehry

I have to admit, I've had mixed feelings about the new travel series on PBS, Spain: On the Road Again. Maybe that's because I'm jealous.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Batelli, Mark Bittman, and Claudia Bassols traveled through Spain sampling the local cuisine, which for them meant grilling fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables in the middle of a vineyard, drinking wine from said vineyard, then enjoying each tantalizing bite. There have been many closeups of the lovely ladies, but not enough of the gorgeous scenery. I have nothing against admiring the beauty of a woman but when I'm interested in a travel show, particularly one chronicling an amazing country such as Spain, I'd actually like to see, well, Spain.

Last weeks episode upped the ante when Gwyneth and Mario met with THE Frank Gehry inside the Guggenheim, as he explained his journey in completing the building. I pictured myself in Gwyneth's stilletoed shoes and swooned. What an honor it would be to meet with Mr. Gehry and discuss his creative process.
Standing with Mario and Gwyneth, Gehry mentioned sketching a version of the Guggenheim in the very beginning, then not accepting his initial idea until six months later. All because of the dreaded beast of any artist...insecurity. A lesson to be learned from Frank Gehry: trust your instincts, famed architect or not.

Pumpkins in Petaluma

To get into the autumn spirit, I was jonesing for a visit to a pumpkin patch. Having not been to one since my younger years, I was hoping it would start a new tradition. Incidentally, having a new dog seems to be the equivalent of having a new baby. She is a perfect excuse to return to childhood activities. And really, I knew this backdrop would make for magnificent photos.

We chose to visit Peter Pumpkin Patch at the Spring Hill Cheese Farm in Two Rock Valley by a simple search on the web. The views are gorgeous, the pumpkin selection is endless and the milk for their delicious dairy products comes from a herd of pasture-grazed Jersey cows. This farm is certainly about quality. Another lure was the original manufactured farmhouse, ordered from the Sears-Roebuck Catalog in 1877 and delivered by train to the valley. I left with some of their organic butter and plans to slather it on a piece whole grain toast. Cheese is available, too, of course, but the best part of this orange colored day was the creamy homemade pumpkin ice cream. A day full of treats that is definitely worth repeating.

Postcard from the North Coast with Love

What draws me to this place, year after year, winding slowly up the coast?
Waves crash violently along the rocky shores.
I see a sign for the next vista point, pull over and momentarily leave my safe haven.
Standing on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the tumultuous sea
I inhale deeply, cool, salty air filling my lungs to their bursting point,
Imagining I’m inhaling life itself.
The smell, so intoxicating it would be priceless if bottled and corked.
I would spend my life going door-to-door selling those bottles filled with sea air
Just so others could find this bliss.
If I could.
Is this the only reason I’m here?

Keep Tahoe White or Snow Trip on a Whim

It was my first time seeing snow fall so heavily. Piles and piles of snow covered rooftops of homes and cars, creating mushroom clouds of white powder. I was curious how people left their cozy cabins when there was 10 feet of snow in front of their door. It was a new experience for this coast loving Californian. But that’s exactly why I travel. And short day trips provide no fewer discoveries than a long trek.

As we wound through the white wonderland with snowbanks higher than our roof racks, I felt like a child in the middle of a fairytale. Some women dream of fairytale weddings, I dream of fairytale road trips.

After crashing at a friend’s house in Sacramento Saturday night to shorten the drive, we traveled another hour and a half finally arriving at Sugarbowl ski resort. Warm and snug in the car, I gazed out the window at the wind forcing the falling snow sideways. I in my fancy blue jeans and stylish Merrell boots admired each passer by sporting goggles and snow boots. I felt out of place but, like every seasoned traveler, pretended I knew the deal and tried to blend in.
After a few near wipe outs walking up the path to the lodge, we finally made it to my dwelling for the day. I immediately spotted the fireplace and asked some kind gentlemen for their table as soon as they stood up to go ski. A smile goes a long way. “Staying in the lodge today?” they asked. I most certainly am.
Hot coffee, a good book and a crackling fire was something I was not going to leave.

The Sierra Vista Bar beckoned, crisp microwbrews on tap. It was nearing 10:30 in the morning and a few people were already bellying up. I decided to hold out a bit longer, if only because after the beer a nap would be required.

Adventurers stomped in and out and I listened as they all mentioned the rough weather outside. I felt bad for my companion, braving the conditions because of his desire to shred. I admired him. I definitely wasn’t made for the cold. I had a feeling even he might not last long, despite his love for snow.

And so it was, his afternoon cut short by the gusty winds at the top of the ski lift. It took a while to warm up the car and even longer to warm my extremities.
Soon we were making our way slowly down the mountain, as I waved my gloved hand out the window to bid farewell to the last bit of snow.

Ole! Ole, ole, ole! Ole! Ole! A stadium of thousands scream this rythmic chant. Drums beat and horns sound almost as fast as the feet stomping on the wooden planks below. The ball moves quickly, fights break out on the field. Beer is consumed among the masses. Fights break out off the field. The thrill is in this stadium. The pitch is heaven on earth.

Football. Futbal. Soccer. Okay, it's the United States. We call it soccer. But it just sounds so much more romantic in Spanish and a tad bit intense from the British. Maybe that has to do with how much these foreigners love the sport. Soccer in the United States is a third rate game. And it makes me want to cry.
How can anyone in their right mind underestimate the power of a good soccer game. The bright green field scattered with extremely fit, agile athletes using their graceful skills to make the opposite team look like bafoons. It's outstanding.

I've been lucky enough to attend two San Jose Earthqaukes games during their amazing season this year and I hope to follow them into the playoffs. Both games their opponent was the Los Angeles Galaxy, their star rivals. Landon Donovan, Coby Jones. They were there and I was watching every minute. Except for the endless times a woman a few rows in front of us held up her Galaxy scarf. I'm all for supporting your team but c'mon, do you really think a small piece of fabric will catch a focused players attention a few hundred yards away? And what are the chances he will actually think, 'Hey there's a fan with a scarf. I was feeling a bit tired before but now I'm inspired.'

Alas, my bitterness was washed down with a polish dog and a glass of Newcastle. Soccer, or football rather, even inspires me to drink English!
